Fairy, Texas by Margo Bond Collins

Fairy, Texas
Margo Bond Collins
Young Adult, Paranormal

Fairy, Texas. A small town like any other.

Laney Harris didn't want to live there. When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that "boring" would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.

She was right. Boring took on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

Excerpt:
“Okay, girls,” Coach Spencer yelled above the chatter around me. “We’re going to get warmed up for this year with a little run around the outer track.” She gestured toward a field off to the right of the building. I could see a dirt track wending its way along the edge, disappearing into a copse of stubby trees and scrub brush at the far end. “Four laps,” Spencer added. A general groan went up, and I was glad that the discussion at lunch had distracted me from eating too much. Late August in Texas is hot.

“Well?” the coach said. “Get going!”

We started off at a trot toward the field, many of the girls around me still complaining. For a moment, I considered hanging back with the crowd, but Andrew had told me that Spencer coached the girls’ track team. I wanted to impress her. So I stretched my legs out as I hit the track and settled in to a long stride, my breathing still easy.

The afternoon sun beat down on my head. I watched the small grove grow closer, anxious for some shade. By the time I hit the bend in the track that led into the thicket, I was yards ahead of the rest of the runners—so when I rounded the curve and tripped over the body, I was all alone.

It didn’t take long for everyone else to catch up, but it seemed like an eternity as I scrambled back, crab-like. It took a moment for my brain to translate the messages my eyes were sending it—the images coalesced slowly, like one of those magic pictures with the 3D images inside.

He had been stretched out spread-eagle across the trail, head and feet half-concealed in the brush on either side. Blood pooled around him, sticky and half-dried at the edges. His shirt had been ripped open and a slash opened him from his throat to his stomach.

As the other girls rounded the bend, I realized that the high, keening noise in the background was the sound of my own screaming. As soon as I realized it, I stopped, but several of my classmates picked up where I left off.

My hands and knees were coated with blood where I had landed; my skin was tacky with it. I crawled over to the nearest bush and vomited.

Coach Spencer shoved her way through the girls and stuttered to a stop, her hand to her mouth. “Oh, God,” she said. “It’s Cody Murphy.”

Dreams of Desire by Cassie Wright

Dreams of Desire
Cassie Wright
New Adult Romance

Shattered by the loss of her family in a brutal car accident, Jessie Ford has spent the past two years trying to piece her life together. Only her passion for sculpting, her best friend Rachel, and her fierce need to protect her younger brother Tommy from himself have kept her going. It’s not until she meets Julian St. Claire that she realizes just how broken she really is.

As wealthy and enigmatic as he is handsome, Julian recognizes in Jessie a hidden talent for piloting Dreams – his new technology that allows people to share their fantasies – and asks Jessie to come work for him.

Yet the the intensity of their chemistry makes his proposition a dangerous one. It’s only when Tommy calls, desperate and owing far too much money to the wrong people, that Jessie realizes she may have no choice. She just has to let go of her fears, and set this alluring stranger’s world on fire.

Excerpt:
Julian turns his horse around, and I can tell that his stallion is impatient, wants to run. It tosses its head but Julian handles it smoothly. “Now. Are you ready?”
Ready? For what?”
For what comes next. Come on!” He turns his stallion to face the cliff and digs his heels into its flanks. His horse rises up on its hind legs, hooves kicking the air, and then falls into a gallop, bursting forward. I almost scream. Julian races right up to the edge of the cliff - and then leaps - and sails forward and out of view.
I can’t believe my eyes. I just sit there, blinking like a fool. All I can hear is the sound of the wind and distant songbirds. My horse stirs restlessly beneath me, and I soothe her with my hand. Follow him? Leap over the edge? I can feel my heart pounding. I swing a leg over the saddle and slip to the ground, wrapping the reins over the pommel. I bite my lower lip and walk to the edge of the cliff. There’s nothing below. Just distant trees. Had he crashed down through the canopy? No. He couldn’t have.
That’s when it truly hits me. This is a fantasy. A shared dream. This isn’t real, and what he’s done isn’t suicidal, just mind blowing. I can do this. I can leap over the edge of the cliff on a perfect white horse, and not be afraid.
It’s easy enough to say. Standing there, feeling the cold wind against my cheek, smelling the distant forest, it seems all too real. A test, I realize. He’s seeing what I’m capable of. I take a deep breath and walk back to my horse. She whickers and leans her soft nose down into my neck, and I rub her cheek and scratch under chin. She’s beautiful. I look in her great eyes and see a gentleness of soul that makes me feel connected to her.
Are you ready?” I’m asking her but the answer wells up from my heart: I am.
I climb back up and sit confidently in the saddle. I won’t deny that I’m terrified and exhilarated all at once. My mind may believe this is a dream, but my body is fully in it. Adrenaline is flooding through me, and my vision is focused on one narrow spot: the cliff’s edge. I picture Julian’s stormy eyes, and then kick my heels into my horse’s sides and she bolts forward.
Her hooves pound into the rock. She’s not even remotely afraid. I lean forward, narrow my eyes against the wind, and hold on tight as she surges up and leaps into infinity.

Review - Stim by Kevin Berry

Stim
Kevin Berry
Contemporary, New Adult

Robert is different. He has Asperger’s Syndrome. He experiences the world differently to 99% of the population. Follow his entertaining and highly empathetic story as he struggles to realise and accept who he really is, try to understand other people—which he cannot—and find a girlfriend. Especially find a girlfriend—he’s decided it’s his special project for the year. Accompanied on this transformative journey by his quirky flatmates, Chloe (who also has Asperger’s, amongst other things), Stef (who hasn’t, but doesn’t mind) and their oddly-named kitten, Robert endures a myriad of awkward moments in his quest to meet a nice, normal girl…and not even a major earthquake will stop him.

This absorbing and humorous story is starkly told from Robert’s point of view, through the kaleidoscope of autistic experience.

My Review
Robert's book truly is written in Robert's voice. Rarely is a character so powerfully shown through text, but the author has done a sterling job with Robert. This will either enchant you or drive you bonkers - people with Asperger's Syndrome have a tendency to ramble off-topic and "info dump", and at times Robert tested my patience with the story itself. But it is sweet. It has a way of luring you in so that you feel unable to get angry with the character.

The real gem of this work is the way that it allows the reader a glimpse into the Autistic Spectrum world in a way that no textbook could. It does so in a story that is heartwarming and funny. Robert is not light-years away from Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, complete with awkward reactions to social situations, except that Robert truly has heart and cares for people. He is honest to a fault and lays his emotions bare, usually with disastrous or hilarious consequences.

The negative points in this book are related to the flow. In some places the amount of detail is over-the-top and in others the scenes felt incomplete, without the expected build-up or genuine emotions conveyed to the reader. This is a side-effect of having two main characters with AS - emotions can be a rollercoaster of enormous or non-existent - but it left me feeling a little let-down. I wanted to experience it all, and instead the ending left me hanging with a blunt resolution that felt slightly unfinished.

I originally wanted to read this because I have a family member with AS, but believe the book has appeal even if you don't. The story is strong enough to stand on its own.

I give the book four stars. I was provided a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Orphan And The Thief by M. L. Legette

The Orphan And The Thief
by M. L. LeGette
Children's, Fantasy

An adventure that will keep you and your kids spellbound.

Toad thought it’d be easy to steal from Mr. Edward P. Owl. Unfortunately for Toad, he isn’t the best of thieves. Caught in the act, he’s in more trouble than ever before. Now to save his hide, Toad must track down five rare potion ingredients for Mr. Owl. Or else. All Melena Snead wants is her family back, but after the Miggens Street Fire, that isn’t very likely. Orphaned and miserable, forced to work in an apothecary, she’s determined to find Milo, her missing brother. No matter what.

When Melena finds Toad ransacking her apothecary, Toad gets a nasty shock: apothecaries don’t carry Mr. Owl’s ingredients. Luckily, Melena’s willing to help, for a price.

With Melena’s pet Spit-Fire dragon and Toad’s enchanted talking beer mug, they embark on a fantastical journey, traveling the country in search of the potion ingredients. But can they gather all of them in time, what with monsters, pirates, and axe-wielding thieves? And if they do, is there an even greater danger waiting for them at the end?

Excerpt:
Panicking, Toad rushed, “Come on, Gent. There’s gotta be somethin’ that ya want! My prices are reasonable!”
“The price is your life,” Mr. Owl stated, gently placing the dragon statue upon the desk.
Mr. Ogg stopped again, his ham-sized hands falling back to his sides. Toad fell silent, too stunned to dare hope that he wasn’t about to be killed.
“Let me explain how this will work, Mr. Toad. If tonight was like any other night I would happily see your neck snapped and toss you out like the bit of filth that you are.” He gave a heavy sigh. “However, the Hickory Guard have become annoyingly tedious ever since that upstart became Captain.”
“Ya mean Dowell?” asked Toad.
“The man has become so inflated with self importance that he’s actually having me followed. Can you imagine? Me?”
“That’s … awful?” said Toad awkwardly, unsure how to respond.
“So, you will forgive me for not wanting to waste Mr. Ogg’s talents on you with so little preplanning.” He gave the window a casual glance. “I’m sure a guard is stationed outside somewhere and disposing of your body without detection will be troublesome to say the least.”
“Pardon me, sir,” Mr. Ogg interrupted, “but it would be no trouble.”
“Ah, Mr. Ogg! How I like you!” Mr. Owl cheered. “Always ready to break a neck. Good fellow!”
“We can stash him in one of the upstairs rooms,” Mr. Ogg continued in his deep, ocean floor voice. “I’ll make sure he won’t bleed.”
“But a body, even in such a large house, will be difficult to hide if Dowell decides to search the place, as he has been hinting at for the last fortnight. No, no, my man. We cannot afford the risk of housing him here.”
Toad sat still in his chair. It wasn’t every day that his own murder was discussed in such a light, conversational manner.
